Attitude

A friend sent me an e-mail about a man with the best attitude one could have. The man noted that life involves choices: We can choose to be in a good mood or a bad mood, we can choose to be victims or we can learn from misfortune, we can choose to do the best we can every day or we can concede defeat. When faced with a serious injury, the man stated that he could choose to live or he could choose to die. For the sake of his family and friends, he chose to live and the doctors credited his positive attitude as a partial reason for his recovery. This man had learned an important lesson, the lesson that attitude is everything, that with a positive attitude we can change our lives and the lives of everyone around us.

We've all seen people like that, people who can keep smiling no matter what life throws at them, people who always look forward with hope, people who genuinely believe that things will get better. These are the people we gravitate to, the people we look for at parties, at work, at play. These are the people who encourage co-workers, who build the spirits of the unfortunate. These are the people who never give up, who keep trying no matter how difficult the situation. These are the people who make things better for all of us.

We've also seen the others, the people who communicate gloom, who feel themselves abused by fate, by circumstances, by other people. These are the people who always find the worst in situations, in other people. These are the people who look for defeat, who look backward, who don't believe in the future. These people tend to be discouraged in most situations and make others discouraged.

The thing about a good attitude is that it makes us feel better about ourselves, no matter what's happening, and it makes other people feel better about themselves. Think positively and things will be better. A friend's son told me of an explorer who announced that "we set sail in confident expectation of a miracle." The explorer made it to far shores and so can we.
