KINDNESS(2)(Just for fun) I often think about kindness. I've written about it before. I think that kindness is missing from many lives and hearts, that kindness could improve the lives of all of us, both givers and recipients, and that it's a bit of good we can all bring by a little thought and care. But today I'm just writing for fun. I'm a voracious reader of web journals. I enjoy the writing and I learn a lot from web journals, about people and places I'll never see in real life. Some of the people I "meet" in this way are like best friends or family. Their thoughts are interesting to me, they entertain and enlighten me, and, occasionally, they give me the opportunity to help. I've learned who thinks as I do, who I can trust, who's depressed and who's happy, who's bored and who's fully engaged. Although I read a few men's web journals, I mostly read the journals of young women. For whatever reason, they seem more interested and interesting, more inquiring, more fun. Today, at the end of this Thanksgiving weekend, I want to share a link I found on a favorite page. http://www.thesurrealist.co.uk/slogan.cgi? This link took me to a fun site that generates slogans from words you can enter. I entered civility and it responded "Plink, Plink, Civility ...". I entered friends and it responded "Friends Stay Sharp 'til the Bottom of the Glass". I entered golf and it responded "Just Like Golf Used to Make". I didn't get much from these but when I entered kindness, it responded "Can You Tell Kindness From Butter?" I first laughed but when I thought about it it made some sense. Kindness is warm and nourishing, it smoothes our passage through life, it tastes good. In that sense, kindness is like butter. But also butter is different: it's an inanimate substance, it's not healthy or palatable to some people and too much of it will make you feel bad. That's how I tell the difference: There's no such thing as too much kindness. Have fun with the link when you have time. If you find anything worth repeating, e-mail me. 12-2-02 Home Page 2002 Archives 2001 Archives 2000 Archives 1999 Archives
