Negativity A friend sent me a link to a film about positive thinking. In addition to my fascination with the technology that permitted viewing the film on my computer monitor, I was intrigued by the film itself. It argued that thinking positively was not enough and that we must also avoid thinking about the negative in any way. I believe strongly that thinking positively leads to better lives, but I haven't previously thought about the notion of altogether eliminating thoughts about the negative. I've previously believed that positive thinking may or must include thoughts about what we are trying to avoid. That is, if I think today will be good, somewhere in my mind is what would be bad, what am I trying to avoid. I find myself thinking that thinking positively includes avoiding the pot-holes of life, not stepping in the puddles on the ground, steering our way around the obstacles, and that we can't do that without recognizing their existence. If I think, as I've written before, that keeping moving is an important part of success, I must by definition be thinking that there is a reason. I must be thinking that there's something to avoid. I need to think more about this and be sure I understand the message of the movie. But there's one thing that the movie and I agree on 100%: We must think positively to move forward in life. We must believe in ourselves, we must believe that we can and will succeed, we must believe that the future holds good things for us. If we don't look forward confidently, we will inevitably fail. If we think positively, we will have positive results. If we have positive results, we will also be able to help others and that's the best result we can achieve. 8-21-06 2006 Archives 2005 Archives 2004 Archives 2003 Archives 2002 Archives 2001 Archives |
