Reality (Once More) I've written before about reality, from the standpoint of acceptance of the way things are and from the standpoint of dreaming about the world as we'd like it to be. In another of my favorite Dilbert cartoons, one of the workers notes that he has considered unrealistic options in the current week and plans to think about using technology that isn't yet available in the following week. This sadly represents the thinking of many of the people we encounter. We can understand our problems, our situations, the way the world is, but expect unrealistic actions to solve our problems, correct situations we don't like, make the world better. Even though we accept reality in analyzing our situations, we can't improve anything unless we also accept realistic solutions, actions that can actually occur. We can't tell ourselves that a certain solution should be pursued unless that solution is actually available to us. We can't overestimate our own capabilities, such as our ability to control others, and expect to solve anything. We also must recognize that few problems solve themselves. It's usually unrealistic to assume that doing nothing will make things better. Even though we accept the reality of the way things are and even if we develop a path to progress, we must implement it. We must take the action our path dictates. Acceptance of reality requires a realistic plan of improvement. Take action as your abilities permit and don't stop trying. Do your best and reality may end up the same as you've been dreaming about. 10-1-07 2007 Archives 2006 Archives 2005 Archives 2004 Archives 2003 Archives 2002 Archives 2001 Archives 2000 Archives 1999 Archives |
