Rededication One of my favorite professional golfers, Tom Lehman, noted that “you get to a point in your career where you either decide it's time to get serious and make some changes - or you quit. . . . I only had one option, and that was to . . . rededicate myself to . . . my game, and to work harder … " I'm a good bit older than Mr. Lehman. I'm at an age when many of my peers are thinking of retirement or have already retired so I understand his point very well. If we aren't ready to rededicate ourselves, to continue to try to make improvements, to work harder (which seems to be required as we age), then it's time to retire, to quit. If we can't muster the energy to work harder, then, sadly, it is time to retire. No matter what our age, we should still have goals, we should still have things we want to achieve, to complete. If we've reached all our goals, it's time to find new goals, goals that will be challenging and worthwhile. In thinking about Tom Lehman's comments, I've come to understand my own choices. I've come to understand that the less we have to do, the less we do. We need to be busy, occupied, working or we begin to stultify ourselves. I apparently understood this earlier because my New Year's resolution for this year stated that "I don't plan to give up and I will continue to try my best to help others. Even if I can't help everyone I can help someone. And I resolve that during 2006 I won't lose sight of my goals." About half-way through the year, I like to give an update on my resolutions. This year, I'm pleased to say that that I have made progress. I've embarked on a new venture that will require high energy, hard work, attention. Without analyzing all of my goals, I can say that one of my goals is to keep going and I've made a start towards achieving this goal. All in all, at the half-way point, this year's resolutions seem to be capable of achievement and there has been progress. Think about goals, think about what it will take to reach them and keep reaching for them. If you should reach them, set new goals and repeat the progress. Never stop trying. You'll feel better about yourself and you'll make others feel better about themselves if only because of the example you set. 6-5-06 2006 Archives 2005 Archives 2004 Archives 2003 Archives 2002 Archives 2001 Archives |
