Resolutions 2007

               Every year at this time we look back on the year ending and look forward to the year in prospect. I already reviewed the past year and graded myself so this week I need only to look forward and establish my goals for the year to come.

                                         For the last several years, I've had pretty much the same goals: Help myself to be stronger so I can better help others. Use my limited resources to help others and recognize that the best help is helping others to help themselves. I want to maintain these goals but I want to add a goal for next year, a goal that may facilitate the others, a goal that may already be a part of the others but a goal I've not articulated in the past. My added goal for 2007 is to be entertaining.

                                         To entertain is to divert, to amuse. It's to take people's minds from their lives, from their daily troubles, from their regular occupations. Some look to the movies, some to music, to nightclubs, to other diversions to get away from it all for a period of time. Others are unable to find entertainment at all and find themselves consumed by care. Whether they reveal it or not, the latter are wearing themselves down, making themselves tired, wasting energy. Those who "burn out", that is those who become so worn they can't continue to do their jobs effectively, are usually in this category.

                                         I'm not sure how I'm going to accomplish this goal. I generally look within for my own entertainment. I look to hobbies, to reading especially, to amuse myself. I'm a serious person and even in my resting moments I approach things seriously. I probably won't become a comedian or clown. Maybe it's as simple as being attentive to what will entertain others and trying to bring it to them. I'm going to try because I know that if I succeed I'll help others and I'll likely find entertaining others to be entertaining to myself.

                                         I've been around people who are entertaining and they seem to benefit others and themselves. I'll learn from them and try to emulate them. In any event, I intend to continue to try to help others as best I can even if I never learn to be entertaining.
