Stand Up

A favorite website reminds me that to stay down when knocked down makes us ineffective, will cause us to decay, unable to move forward with our lives, unable to achieve our goals, unable to hit any of our targets. It's only a reminder because we must at some level already realize that accepting defeat, refusing to make an effort, eliminates all hope of success.

Everyone has problems, at least at some time in his or her life. Some problems are small, some are big. Some problems we cause ourselves, others are forced upon us. Some problems can be solved quickly, others may take some time. To solve some problems, we may need assistance and others we can solve by ourselves. However our problems arose, whatever the solution, they are our problems. We must solve them, invoking whatever assistance we can. The main thing is that we stand up to our problems and do the best we can do solve them.

The alternative illustrates the need to stand up and battle our problems. If we surrender, if we give up, if we don't make an effort to solve our problems, we lose our ability to live, to be contented, to move forward. Surrender to our problems means that we stop living, cower and hide. If, on the other hand, we recognize the need to solve problems, if we commit to the effort, that effort alone can provide the basis for a happy life. If we keep trying, if we don't let problems get us down, if we look forward to meeting our problems, if we move towards solutions, it doesn't matter whether we reach the solutions. The activity will energize us, the effort will be enough.

There is no problem that is insurmountable. We may not be able to achieve a complete solution but the very act of trying is a partial solution. The ultimate value is to keep going, no matter how difficult it is; as long as we are working towards a solution, we have hope of better things. And, it goes almost without saying, the example we set may help others to solve their problems.
